Common Safety Mistakes in BMX

At Northern Colorado BMX, we’re all about having fun while you're riding but staying safe while doing it is just as important. Whether you're hitting your first stunt or you've been shredding for years, a few smart habits and the right gear can make a huge difference and save you some serious hospital bills. Read this short list of common safety slip-ups so you can steer clear of them and keep the good times rolling.
- Not wearing a helmet: Not wearing your helmet can lead to serious head and spine injury, ensure to ALWAYS be wearing a helmet if you are riding.
- Ignoring knee and elbow pads: Knee and elbow pads are often overlooked for safety gear but can prevent significant injuries such as broken bones or severe skin damage.
- Not wearing gloves: Failing to wear gloves reduces your grip on your bike & exposes hands to scrapes & cuts.
- Improper footwear: Wearing casual shoes such as flip flops or sandals instead of grip-soled, closed-toe shoes such as tennis shoes risks major foot injury.
- Ignoring shin guards: While not necessary for everyday riding, they should always be used during stunt/trail riding as ignoring them leaves you vulnerable to painful pedal strikes.
